ABSTRACT

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for organisms. Se deficiency will cause diseases such as Keshan disease and Kashin-Beck in human being, and huge loss to animal husbandry. Currently available Se supplements have such problems as low Se content, poor bioavailability, and poor safety. Chlorella pyrenoidosa can produce bioavailable and safe organic Se under suitable conditions, which is thus a promising Se supplement. Therefore, in this study, we tried to improve the Se tolerance and accumulation of C. pyrenoidosa by directional adaptation. To be specific, we gradually increased the concentration of Na2SeO3 in medium to domesticate C. pyrenoidosa and optimized the adapting time and concentration gradient of Na2SeO3 during the adaptation. The results showed that the adapted C. pyrenoidosa was more tolerant to Se and had stronger Se enrichment ability. In 5 L fermenter, the adapted strains could tolerate 40 mg/L Na2SeO3 and the synthesis rate of organic Se was 175.6% higher. Then, Se addition method in the 5 L fermenter was optimized. The result demonstrated that addition of Na2SeO3 at 40 mg/L during heterotrophic culture achieved the final dry weight of C. pyrenoidosa cells at 106.4 g/L, content of organic Se at 1 227 mg/kg, and synthesis rate of organic Se at 1.36 mg/(L·h). Compared with the reported highest cell density of 75 g/L and the highest organic Se content of 560 mg/kg, the corresponding figures in this study were 41.9% and 119.1% higher, respectively. In conclusion, directional adaptation can remarkably improve the Se tolerance and enrichment of C. pyrenoidosa.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To summarize the clinical characteristics of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infected with Delta variant, so as to provide further references for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Methods:A real-world study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of 166 COVID-19 patients infected with Delta variant at Guangzhou Eighth People’s Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University. Results:The study enrolled 5 asymptomatic cases, 123 non-severe cases (mild and moderate type), and 38 severe cases (severe and critical type). Among these patients, 69 (41.6%) were male and 97 (58.4%) were female, with a mean age of 47.0±23.5 years. Thirty-nine cases (23.5%) had received 1 or 2 doses of inactivated vaccine. The incidence of severe COVID-19 cases was 7.7% in 2-doses vaccinated patients, which was lower than that of 11.5% in 1-dose and 26.8% in unvaccinated patients. The proportion of severe cases in 2 dose-vaccinated patients was 7.7%, which was lower than that of 11.5% in 1-dose vaccinated patients and 26.8% in unvaccinated patients, but the difference was not significant ( P>0.05). The most common clinical symptom was fever (134 cases, 83.2%), and 39.1% of cases presented with high-grade fever (≥39 °C); other symptoms were cough, sputum, fatigue, and xerostomia. The proportion of fever in severe cases was significantly higher than that of non-severe cases (97.4% vs. 76.4%, P<0.01). Similarly, the proportion of severe cases with high peak temperature (≥39 ℃) () was also higher than that of non-severe cases (65.8% vs. 30.9%, P<0.01). The median minimal Cycle threshold (Ct) values of viral nucleic acid N gene and ORFlab gene were 20.3 and 21.5, respectively, and the minimum Ct values were 11.9 and 13.5, respectively. Within 48 h of admission, 9.0% of cases presented with decreased white blood cell counts, and 52.4% with decreased lymphocyte counts. The proportions of increased C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, interleukin 6, and interleukin 10 were 32.5%, 57.4%, 65.3%, and 35.7%, respectively. The proportions of elevated C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A and interleukin-6 in severe cases were significantly higher than those in non-severe cases ( P<0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that older age and higher peak temperature were associated with a higher likelihood of severe cases ( OR>3, 95% CI: 2-7, P<0.01). In terms of treatment, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was used in 97.6% of non-severe cases and 100% in severe cases. Other treatments included respiratory and nutritional support, immunotherapy (such as neutralizing antibodies and plasma of recovered patients). The median times from admission to progression to severe cases, of fever clearance, and of nucleic acid conversion were 5 days, 6 days and 19 days, respectively. No deaths were reported within 28 days. Conclusions:The symptoms of Delta variant infection in Guangzhou are characterized by a high proportion of fever, high peak temperature, long duration of fever, high viral load, a long time to nucleic acid conversion, and a high incidence of severe cases. The severe cases exhibit a higher percentage of elderly patients, a longer duration of fever and have a higher fever rate and a higher hyperthermia rate than non-severe cases. Age and hyperthermia are independent risk factors for progression to severe disease. The combination of TCM and Western medicine can control the progression of the disease effectively.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To test the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) in schizophrenia patients. In order to provide resilience scale for schizophrenia patients in China. Methods:A convenient sampling method was used to select 503 inpatients with schizophrenia in Chifeng Anding hospital from December 2017 to December 2018. The Chinese version of CD-RISC was used to conduct a questionnaire survey. Data processing was performed using SPSS 23.0 statistical software and AMOS 24.0 software. Results:The item analysis showed that the Chinese version of CD-RISC could discriminate the high-score group from the low-score group ( P<0.01). Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis showed that the correlation between item 3 and the total amount was poor, and it was considered to be deleted. A total of 6 common factors were extracted from the revised exploratory factor analysis of the CD-RISC, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 50.79%. The Cronbach α coefficient was 0.882, and the test-retest reliability was 0.912 after two weeks. Confirmatory factor analysis fitted index: χ2/ df was 1.057, RMSEA was 0.015, GFI was 0.926, CFI was 0.989, and IFI was 0.989. Conclusions:The revision 24-item CD-RISC has good psychometric properties, it could be used to assess resilience in Chinese patients with schizophrenia.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the relationship between brain injury related symptom groups and acute stress disorder( ASD). Methods Totally 301 patients with brain injury hospitalized in the Affiliated Hospital of North China University of Technology from March 2017 to March 2018 were recruited. The pa-tients were assessed by Stanford Acute Stress Response Questionnaire ( SASRQ), Brain Trauma Subscale (BIS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results The prevalence of acute stress disorder pa-tients with brain injury was 46. 51% (140/301). The SASRQ score of all patients with brain injury was (70. 78±28. 00). Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences in age (χ2= 4. 172,P=0. 041),personality type (χ2= 57. 281,P<0. 001),sleep quality ( χ2= 70. 785,P<0. 001),hospitalization frequency (χ2= 43. 547,P<0. 001),depression,obsessive-compulsive and hostile symptoms between pa-tients with and without ASD ( P<0. 05). The scores of depression and obsessive-compulsive symptoms were significantly correlated with SASRQ scores(P<0. 05). The scores of hostility symptoms were significantly cor-related with SASRQ scores except for patients who lost their temper uncontrollably ( r=0. 176-0. 698,P<0. 05). Personality ( OR=0. 243,95% CI=0. 142-0. 415),sleep disorders( OR=0. 072,95% CI=0. 029-0. 178),hospitalization times(OR=0. 129,95%CI=0. 054-0. 306),depressive symptoms( OR=1. 260,95% CI=1. 061-1. 497),obsessive-compulsive symptoms(OR=1. 419,95%CI=1. 239-1. 625) and hostile symp-toms(OR=1. 253,95%CI=1. 058-1. 482) were the influencing factors of ASD in patients with brain injury (P<0. 05). Conclusion The incidence of ASD is higher in patients with brain injury. Personality type,hos-pitalization,sleep quality, depressive symptoms,obsessive-compulsive symptoms and hostile symptoms are the influencing factors, which should be paid more attention.

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare the biomechanical stability of different fixation methods for unstable pelvic fractures, so as to provide references for clinical treatment. Methods An unstable pelvic fracture model (Tile C) with the sacroiliac joint dislocation at one side and the pubic rami fracture was constructed via three-dimensional finite element method. In the front of the pelvis, the fracture models were fixed with anterior pelvic Stoppa approach (ASA),subcutaneous anterior pelvic approach (APA), anterior pelvic ilioinguinal approach (AIA) and anterior pelvic external fixation (AEF),and the rear was fixed with sacroiliac joint screw (SIJS)and posterior tension-band plate (PTP). The Von Mises stress and strain distributions of fracture models fixed by different combinations of fixation approaches were analyzed under simulated standing conditions. Results After the models were applied with 500 N vertical load, the maximum stresses at the fracture sites were all reduced, which were smaller than 10 MPa in the front of the pelvis. The maximum stress at the anterior and posterior part of implants in sequence was ASA<AIA<AEF<APA, and the average displacement under the same stress in sequence was ASA<AIA<AEF<APA. Meanwhile, the maximum stresses at the sacroiliac joint and the posterior part of implants in PTP group were significant smaller than those in SIJS group, and the maximum total displacement and vertical displacement in PTP group were also smaller than those in SIJS group. Conclusions Unstable pelvic fractures could be significantly improved when the fracture was fixed by implants in eight combined methods. However, the overall biomechanical properties of the AIA groups were superior to those of the AEF groups and the APA groups. The stability of PTP groups in the treatment of posterior injury was better than that of SIJS groups.

ABSTRACT

Photoautotrophic cultivation with heterotrophic cells as seeds (heterotrophic cells/photoautotrophic cultivation) is an effective way for the development of microalgal biofuel, but its development potential from the point of process optimization has not been investigated in literatures. To evaluate this, the optimizations of medium and culture conditions for Chlorella ellipsoidea were studied. In the heterotrophic stage, the biomass concentration reached 11.04 g/L with the optimized medium in flask, which were 28.0% higher than that with the original medium, and the biomass concentration reached 73.89 g/L in 5-L fermenter. In the photoautotrophic stage, the culture medium and conditions were studied in a 2-L column photobioreactor. The maximum biomass concentration, lipid content and lipid productivity reached 1.62 g/L, 36.34% and 6.1 mg/(L·h) under the optimal photoautotrophic conditions. The lipids were mainly composed of C16-C18 fatty acids, which were raw material suitable for biodiesel. After optimization, heterotrophic cells/photoautotrophic cultivation can significantly improve the capacity of biofuel production by Chlorella ellipsoidea, this method is also expected to be an efficient way for the cultivation of other microalgae that can grow heterotrophically.

ABSTRACT

As a new type of carbon nanomaterials, fluorescent carbon dots (fluorescent CDs) have many advantages when compared with the traditional fluorescent probes. They are photoluminescence stable and resistance to photo bleaching. Moreover, they are excellent in biocompatibility, low-toxic and easy to modify. All these above make them a promising optical image material as a probe in optical image. This article reviews structure, the common carbon sources, the preparation methods, and the light-emitting principles of the carbon dots. We also introduce the research progress of fluorescent carbon dots in biomedicine, and the problems need to be resolved in the study of fluorescent CDs.

ABSTRACT

With the dwindling of fossil fuels supply and the urgent need for the development of low-carbon economy, microalgae bioenergy, both renewable and environmentally friendly, has become one of the worldwide focuses. Given its benefit to the security of national energy supply, microalgae energy is particularly significant for China, with more than 50% crude oil imported and limited arable land for grain and edible oil production. In this article, both the advantages of microalgae bioenergy and the challenges of its development are addressed, which involves fundamental research and technology development as well as commercial production. Furthermore, strategies are proposed for China's microalgae bioenergy development, and its prospects are projected.
